Salmon in general, are born in a freshwater area and then go out to sea into salt water after they are born. They stay out there until they are ready to spawn and then they will find their way back to where they were originally born using their sense of smell. They will then head back into freshwater and spawn, afterwards however they will die.

There are five types of Pacific salmon

There are five types of Pacific salmon. All of which you can easily learn by using the five-finger method. I learned it, while cruising in Alaska.

The five-finger method

The first fish using your thumb is called the Chum, because it rhymes with thumb. You index or pointy finger can poke you easily in your eye socket, therefore it can be used for the Sockeye fish. Your middle finger, or largest finger, stands for the biggest salmon, the King. Your ring finger holds your wedding ring, which can be made of silver, so it is the Silver salmon. Finally, your pinkie finger can be used for the last salmon, the Pink salmon.
